Shop Pay now works inside AI agents. What Shopify merchants should do
Shop MCP, Shop Pay in Claude Duet and direct checkout in Gemini mean shoppers can now buy inside AI chats. What launched, what is limited, and five moves for merchants.
The short answer
In October 2026 Shopify launched Shop MCP, which lets AI agents search Shopify Catalog, build carts and pay with Shop Pay, and Claude Duet launched with Shop Pay as its wallet. Agent orders land in your Shopify admin like any other order, so the work for merchants is accurate product data, complete policies and a check of Agentic Storefronts in the admin.

Your next order might not come from someone on your website. It might come from an AI assistant that found your product, built the cart and paid with Shop Pay, all inside a chat.
That stopped being a slide-deck idea this month. Shopify shipped Shop MCP on October 13, and on October 21 Anthropic's new Claude Duet app launched with Shop Pay built in. Here is what actually changed, what is still limited, and what we would do as a merchant before the holiday rush.
What launched in October?
Shop MCP: one connection for search, cart and checkout
According to Shopify's developer changelog (October 13), Shop MCP lets any MCP-compatible agent search Shopify Catalog, build a cart at the store that sells the product, and complete a Shop Pay checkout through a single connection. Catalog covers over 1 billion products, and search does not need an API key.
The part merchants should notice: orders placed through an agent "appear in the merchant's Shopify admin like any other order." The shopper confirms the total and payment method before the agent completes checkout.
shop.dev also shows how shoppers can add it to Claude, ChatGPT or Claude Code as a connector, so this is not limited to one assistant.
Claude Duet: Shop Pay as the wallet
Anthropic opened a research preview of Claude Duet, a proactive agent app, for US Pro and Max subscribers by waitlist. Its help article explains the payment flow: Duet asks before every purchase, the shopper clicks "Review in Shop Pay" to approve, and each purchase uses a one-time card scoped to the approved amount. Claude never sees the full card number.
Shopify's launch post added a twist: "for the first time, we're opening up Shop Pay in agents to stores not on Shopify." shop.dev says the same thing in plainer terms. The agent gets single-use payment credentials and can pay in a merchant's existing card checkout, "no merchant integration required."
Google AI Mode and Gemini: checkout in the chat
On the Google side, Shopify's help center says direct checkout in Google AI Mode and Gemini is rolling out through Agentic Storefronts to eligible stores, for shoppers in the US, Canada and Australia. It is on by default when your store is eligible, and Shopify charges no extra fee beyond standard payment processing.
What this means for merchants
Two honest caveats first. Claude Duet is a waitlisted preview for US users, and its help page notes that some sites can block Duet from paying. Volumes will be small this BFCM.
But the direction is clear. The agent reads your product data, not your homepage hero. If your titles, variants, stock and policies are thin or wrong, an agent either skips you or sells the wrong thing.
Merchant move: open Sales channels > Agentic in your admin. Shopify gave Agentic Storefronts its own page in May, with performance by AI channel, the queries you rank for and suggestions for your product data. Check it before you touch anything else.
Merchant move: fix product data on your top 20 sellers. Clear titles, every variant option filled in, accurate stock and real specs. shop.dev's own FAQ warns developers that "AI-inferred attributes may be missing or wrong," so give agents the facts directly.
Merchant move: check your policies are complete. Google's direct checkout needs completed store policies and synced Merchant Center data, and the help center asks you to keep return and refund policies matching your store. An agent quoting a stale return window is a support ticket waiting to happen.
Merchant move: know what does not carry over. Custom pixels and product bundles are not supported in Google's direct checkout, while Shopify Functions and your discount codes do run. If your BFCM offer depends on a bundle app, test how it shows up.
Merchant move: try it as a shopper. Run a search for your own product through the Shop connector in Claude or the shop CLI from shop.dev. If your store does not come back, or the price or stock is off, that is your to-do list.
Should you opt out?
You can turn off Google's direct checkout and send shoppers to your store instead (Sales channels > Agentic, then the Google AI Mode and Gemini channel). We would not, unless a checkout customization you rely on is unsupported. Every agent order still lands in your admin, and you stay the merchant.
If you want a second set of eyes on how your store reads to an AI shopper, that is the kind of work we do in Nstruct Launch.
Quick hits
- No webhooks yet. Shop MCP launched without webhooks, so developers poll for checkout status. Worth knowing if your apps react to new orders.
- Shop Pay vs. the Shopify connector. In Claude these are separate: one pays for things, the other lets Claude work inside your store admin.
- Signed-in shoppers rank differently. shop.dev says shoppers signed in with Shop get results ranked by their preferences and history, and that preference data never reaches the agent.
We are talking about this a lot at our merchant meetups in Toronto and NYC. If you want to compare notes with other operators, see what is coming up. For ongoing coverage, follow agentic commerce on Signal.
